"Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;" Romans 3:25
Propitiation means that God is satisfied.
This is where we get forgiveness. The propitiation place was in the holiest of all where the High Priest sprinkled the blood of the lamb on the ark of the covenant, which contained the Law. The Law was broken, and it was a witness against mankind. In a sense, it said, “no God, you cannot forgive them, man cannot be reconciled, and man can’t be with You and he can’t be your heir, because he has this record against him! You wouldn’t be righteous if You were to forgive him!” It was a ministration of condemnation.
"But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory." 2 Cor 3:7-9
That’s why God had to send Jesus, to redeem us. He has also set Him forth to be a propitiation. That is a public display of His Righteousness. We believe in the blood of Christ. That Blood was sprinkled on the ark. That’s what justifies us. It doesn’t only justify us. It also declares God’s Righteousness for the remission “of sins.
"To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." Romans 3:26
