It becomes relevant today because one of these pastors did a message today saying that we have a strange “new view” that the error Paul addresses in Galatians has to do wtih the Christian life. They believe Galatian error has nothing to do with the Christian life, it has to do with how to get saved. But ironically, the pastor spent some time talking about the cross references in his SCOFIELD REFERENCE BIBLE.
Here are the introductory notes to the SCOFIELD REFERENCE BIBLE (emphasis mine).
“The Galatian error had TWO FORMS, both of which are refuted. THE FIRST is the teaching that obedience to the law is mingled with faith as the ground of the sinner’s justification;THE SECOND, that the justified believer is made perfect by keeping the law. Paul meets the FIRST form of the error by a demonstration that justification is through the Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 15:18), and that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after the confirmation of that covenant, and the true purpose of which was condemnation, not justification, cannot disannul a salvation which rests upon the earlier covenant.

Paul’s Gospel is a revelation (Galatians 1:10 – 2:14).
Justification is by faith without law (Galatians 2:15 – 3:24).
The rule of the believer’s LIFE is gracious (GRACE), not legal (Galatians 3:25 – 5:15).
SANCTIFICATION is through the Spirit, not the law (Galatians 5:16-24).
Exhortations and conclusion (Galatians 5:25 – 6:18).”

See how the SCOFIELD REFERENCE BIBLE tells us that the second form of the error in Galatians is that having been jusfiied, we LIVE by law as a rule of life, and that Paul teaches SANCTIFICATION through the Spirit not law, and that our rule of life is GRACE, not law?
I’d never heard of this pastor before last week, and honestly I don’t know if he’s lying or if he’s really this ignorant. But it’s ironic that he would spend time showing his congregation his SCOFIELD reference bible and its cross references in the same message that attempts to refute that Galatian error has anything to do with the Christian life, and that it ONLY has to do with initial justification. He may disagree with scofield’s view, but he cannot level the charge at us that we are introducing a NEW view.
SCOFIELD coined the term that we use, “Galatianism ” in his commentary on galatians chapter 4:

We have, most of us, been reared and now live under the influence of Galatianism. Protestant theology, alas, is for the most part, thoroughly Galatianized, in that neither law nor grace are given their distinct and separated places, as in the counsels of God, but are mingled together in one incoherent system. The law is no longer, as in the divine intent, a ministration of death (2 Cor. 3:7), of cursing (Gal. 3:10), or conviction (Rom. 3:19), because we are taught that we must try to keep it, and that by Divine help we may. Nor, on the other hand, does grace bring us into freedom, for we are kept under the law (see Rom. 6:14).”
Remember the steps: The believer is justified by faith; is dead to the law; is alive again because Christ lives in him; and the principle of his present life is the by-faith principle. This opens an immense door of hope concerning daily deliverance from the power of sin. because “all things are possible to him that believeth.”
This is really important:
If you hear a DISPENSATIONAL, SEMINARY GRADUATED PASTOR tell you that “Galatian Error” refers only to “Salvation” and not to the Christian life, they are not just “misguided” or “confused.” THEY ARE LYING TO YOU.
The error that Paul addresses in Galatians was brought in by false brethren who crept in “unaware.” They desired to trouble babes in Christ and bring them into bondage (Gal 1:7; 2:4).
It is an accursed Gospel, but it is not “another Gospel” (Gal 1:6-8). It is a perversion of the true Gospel centered around diminishing the meaning of “Justification” so that Justification does NOT end up having relevance for the Christian life.
Galatians was written to those who had been called into the grace of Christ (1:6), who had been baptized into Christ, had put Christ on, were the children of God, were Abraham’s Seed (Gal 3:26-29), heirs of the promise and had received the Spirit (Gal 3:29;Gal 3:2). Yet instead of continuing in the Spirit, they were going back to law for the perfecting of the flesh (Gal 3:2-3).
Paul told them that Justification was to qualify them for the Blessing of the Gospel, which was the promise of the Spirit (Gal 3:14), and that the only way to live the Christian life was by the Spirit, (not the energy of the flesh.) Regarding the law and the Christian life, they were to see that they had died to the law to live to God (Gal 2:19), and they were “Crucified with Christ.” It was now to be “no longer I who live but Christ in me” (Gal 2:20) and the life lived now was to be by the “Faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal 2:20).
The just shall LIVE by faith (Gal 3:11).
Justification is the ground we stand on moment by moment to receive the Spirit and enjoy our position as Heirs and stand in the expectation of Christ being our life with His fruit. By the Spirit, we wait like Abraham and Sarah for the righteousness that we anticipate (Gal 5:5). We are not to go into Hagar (a type of Sinai and the law) to produce Ishmael (a type of perfecting the flesh and sowing to the flesh and reaping corruption). We wait for Isaac (the manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit) who is produced not by effort but by waiting patiently in faith (Gal 4:24-29),
The answer to Galatian error is the Word of the Cross.
The CARNAL MAN, (the natural man) being a BABE, and only able to take the MILK of the word, will reject the word of the cross as foolishness. So he is a prime candidate for Galatian error (1 Cor 3:1;1 Cor 2:14).
I have to assume that those who teach Galatian error and LIE (meaning they KNOW what it is but actually lie and tell you that it is something that it is not or divert you from the truth) are “crept in unaware” unless they prove otherwise.
If a seminary-trained pastor tells you that Paul was only dealing with the “Circumcision,” he is not just ignorant, he is lying. Circumcision was not a threat in itself. Paul said in Galatians 6 that in the end circumcision or uncircumcision was not what mattered (gal 5:16;6:15).
Circumcision for Justification was a threat because it introduced them to the Law and obligated them to the whole of it (not just “ceremonial” but moral as well) (Gal 5:3).
If a seminary-trained pastor tells you that Paul was only talking about the ceremonial law and not the moral, he is lying. He knows they cannot be divided, and he should also know that the law written on tablets of stone that contains “Thou shalt not covet” is said to be a ministry of condemnation and death (2 Cor 3:7).
If a seminary-trained pastor tells you that Paul is only talking about “salvation” as a diversionary tactic, he lies or may be deceived. Being a babe himself, he may have a watered-down definition of Justification that just means “going to heaven” and excludes the Christian life. Remember, the apostles didn’t preach, “you’ll go to heaven if you believe” they preached, “you’ll receive the Spirit. The Spirit, which is Christ Himself as our Life, is the Christian life. Without the Spirit, you only have the flesh and its works, religious as they may seem.
Salvation meant more than just “going to heaven” to the early church. Salvation was the blessing of the Christian life. If an early church Christian were to be transported to a Charismatic meeting today and hear a sermon about how to “Get blessed,” they would assume you were talking about salvation.
The blessing of the Christian life is secured by Justification and enjoyed by faith. To put anything between you and that blessing and make you WORK for it is Galatian error. The REASON WHY SEMINARY TRAINED PASTORS CANNOT AFFORD TO TELL YOU THAT THIS IS TRUE IS THAT THEY DEPEND ON YOUR TITHE WHICH IS TODAYS FUNCTIONAL EQUIVALENT OF CIRCUMCISION!
Galatian error is an ACCURSED GOSPEL
Pastors that teach Galatian error and sincerely believe it are BABY CHRISTIANS. They are CARNAL. They do not understand the word of the cross. They do not understand what the flesh is.
Either way, they have an accursed Gospel, and yet they’ve assumed a position of authority and demand to be listened to obeyed. Furthermore, they want you to PAY them to Lord it over your faith, slap you in the face and threaten you with retribution from the Lord if you don’t!
They are standing in front of congregations in diapers with Pacifiers. Their bottle of milk has run out and the congregation has become adults in the meantime.
Thank you so much for teaching on this Galatian error. I spent most of my adult life believing that the book of Galatians was about going back to the ceremonial law. When I was in my 20’s, even though I had left my legalistic and abusive home, my emotional problems were getting worse not realizing that it was the lordship church that I was in. Someone in the church that I was going to at the time advised me to read the book of Galatians. I didn’t, because the pastor had already went over it and I didn’t see, at the time, how it would have helped me. It wasn’t until many years later that I began to understand the gospel that I began to heal. So, I look back and I wish that I had not only taken that person’s advice, but I wish that I had studied it carefully in my dorm taking a vacation away from church environment.
