Make no mistake about it, Romans is a Gospel, and as I said it is called by many the “fifth gospel.” What is the difference between Paul’s Gospel here and what we see in the four gospels (Matthew, Mark Luke and John)? The four Gospels are the story of Jesus here on earth from His incarnation to His death and His resurrection. They are the story of His life and His earthly ministry after His baptism; His three years of ministry when He preached the Gospel and did good and healed those sick of the devil, and God was with Him (Acts 10:38). He then died on the cross, fulfilling the scriptures, and rose from the dead. He did all of this before witnesses who wrote everything down.
Paul’s Gospel describes what it is that Christ is doing now, after His death, resurrection and Ascension to the right hand of God. Christ is not only in the heavens as our High Priest and Advocate, Propitiation and Righteousness before God, but He is the Spirit in us. He is the spirit of Sonship that dwells in His body, and we are members of the Body of Christ. This is a new organism that never existed before, which was created through the death and resurrection of Christ, and is revealed doctrinally through Paul.
The significance of these events does not really become clear until after He went to Heaven and sat down at the right hand of God presenting His blood as a propitiation for our sins. That’s where Paul’s Gospel picks up. His Gospel starts with Christ in the Heavens after He accomplished His work of death and resurrection. He is seated in the heavens and He is our propitiation. He is our righteousness now.
Truth from Paul’s ministry answers questions such as:
- What is Christ doing now that He is in the Heavens (and in us)?
- What is the Body of Christ?
- What is salvation?
- What is justification?
- What does it mean that not only He died for us but that we died with Him and are raised with Him?
- What is the new creation, and what is the “science” of how the Christian life works?
- How is the Church different from Israel?
