Satisfying thirst and hunger

Our desire for holiness is actually a hunger and a thirst to be satisfied with Christ.

When He satisfies us, He gives us rest.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Mat 11:28-30

Rest is a deliverance from this terrible tension between our desires for holiness and our desires for other things that are at war. The only way the tension is resolved is to be satisfied with Christ.

In the scriptures, and in John especially, Christ presents himself as food and drink for our satisfaction! We need to learn to “eat Him.” Our desire for holiness is fulfilled because He quenches our thirst. But He also subdues our desire for sin because He satisfies us.

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:  But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Joh 4:13-14

Come unto Him. Eat and drink.

“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” Joh 7:37-38
