Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.. What does “according to the scriptures” mean?

The Profound Truth of the Gospel | Interpretation of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

I. Introduction

From Paul, we learn that the message that saves us is the Gospel, that Christ died for our sins “according to the Scriptures,” was buried, and rose on the third day, “according to the Scriptures” in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. It’s important to note that Paul mentions the Scriptures twice. At that time, the Scripture he was referring to was the Old Testament prophecies concerning Christ. Peter says the prophets inquired into the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow, which the Spirit testified to them. When Jesus rose from the dead, He not only presented Himself, but He also presented all the Scriptures from Moses, the Psalms, and the Prophets concerning Himself and anchored their faith in the message before revealing Himself. So while the message is simple on the surface, the phrase “according to the Scriptures” points to a deeper reservoir of truth about the “sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.” In the New Testament time, there was a new revelation, called the “mystery of Christ,” which was given to Paul, and this contained much more truth about the death and resurrection of Christ, which is also the Gospel. This has to do with what Christ accomplished that He had not revealed prior to His death and resurrection and how He brought us into union with Himself. It includes things like:

  • Bringing life and immortality to light through the gospel (2 Timothy 1:10).
  • Reconciling all things to Himself, making peace through the blood of His cross (Colossians 1:20).
  • Disarming the rulers and authorities and making public display of them, having triumphed over them through the cross (Colossians 2:15).
  • Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, clearing the way to the holiest and making us into one new man in Himself, in which there is no “jew or greek” but Christ is all and in all. (Ephesians 2:14-16, Col 3:11).
  • Baptizing us into his death and making us alive together with Him and seating us in the heavenlies with Him (Eph 2:6).
  • Making us members of His Body, which is His fullness (Eph 1:23).

IV. Greater appreciation for Christ as our righteousness, sanctification, and reward

Righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Sanctification (1 Corinthians 1:30)
